Who We Are

Active Respite has been a registered charity since the 13th of December 2022. We are a dedicated team of people who decided to make a change! Despite being from different career paths; social work, finance, HR, and even video games - we all had one common goal - to support children to follow their passion for activities they love, but haven’t had the opportunity to try out yet. We knew that by providing children with this opportunity, family members would have time to seek their own respite - and that’s how Active Respite was created.

Active Respite aims to support children in need financially, and practically. Our aim is to get children engaged in opportunities they may not have had the chance to experience yet as a result of financial difficulties. We hope that this also gives carers and siblings some time to themselves for some much-needed respite.

All of our support has been self-funded by our very own trustee Debbie’s donations over the years. This has provided us with the flexibility to make a change without prioritising fundraising for which we are eternally grateful. As a result of this increase in available time, we are able to offer various types of support to families and organisations - Clubs & Activities outside of the home for over 5s (e.g. Football, swimming, music lessons), Active Book Club, and StoryToys educational apps for under 5s in which we provide families with an annual premium subscription to an app which supports the educational well-being of the family. We also began our project with the NOVA Educational Trust in September 2025 in which we have been able to reach children within an educational setting at a level we never imaged possible.

Funding sources

Since inception, we have been entirely funded independently by our very own Trustee Deborah Bestwick. We are eternally grateful that we do not have to seek fundraising opportunities from the public, and can instead prioritise supporting children and families in need entirely with our own funds.

We have been able to fund over 150 children’s activity memberships (totaling over 4,500 individual club sessions), and over 450 books as a result of these donations!

We are excited to be able to provide more support in the future thanks to the donations provided by Deborah.

Support provided in 2025

  • Activities

Over 350 sessions per month are currently being funded by Active Respite. Over 90 children are currently engaging in activities varying from music lessons to new and fun sports!

  • Book Club

Over 450 books have been funded and provided to organisations that work with children in need since the initiation of the book club in April 2025!

  • StoryToys

As a new partner, we are excited to be utilising StoryToys with our partner Nova Trust and provide this educational app to children in need as a fun alternative to education.
